An injured harbour seal pup rescued from the Skidegate ferry ramp area earlier this week has made it safely to Vancouver for treatment after what witnesses described as a collision involving the Kwuna ferry on Monday.

The young seal, nicknamed  Sdlaana, meaning ā€œSurvivorā€ in Xaayda Kil, was rescued near the ramp after suffering serious injuries.

According to those involved in the rescue, the pup was transported off-island for emergency care at the Vancouver Aquarium with assistance from Action For Animals in Distress Society and Pacific Coastal Airlines.

As of the afternoon of May 19, those coordinating the rescue said the seal had arrived safely in Vancouver and was in the care of aquarium staff. The pup’s condition remains serious following the injuries and stress of the incident.

The rescue has also prompted reminders from community members that spring is baby season for wildlife across Haida Gwaii, with many asking people to stay alert and cautious around shorelines, harbours and ferry areas.
