A proud moment for Haida Gwaii unfolded on March 28 as Emilie Savard stepped into the ring in Squamish—and came away with a victory in her first-ever fight.

Competing in a 150 lb contender bout at Squamish Fight Night, Savard not only secured the win but also made history as the first fighter from Diaz Combat Sports (DCS) Haida Gwaii to compete on an official fight card.

For Savard and her team, the result was the culmination of months of preparation, discipline, and commitment. Training out of DCS Haida Gwaii, she has been part of a growing martial arts community on the islands—one that continues to build opportunities for local athletes despite geographic challenges.

“This was a huge step, not just for Emilie, but for our entire gym,” said her team. “To see one of our own step onto that stage and come home with a win is something really special.”

Back in Haida Gwaii, supporters gathered at Diaz Combat Sports to watch the fight via live stream, cheering Savard on from afar. The energy in the gym reflected the pride felt across the community, as friends, family, and teammates witnessed a milestone moment together.

Savard’s victory represents more than just a personal achievement—it signals the emergence of Haida Gwaii fighters on the broader competitive stage. With this first win behind her, she has set the tone for what’s possible for future athletes training locally.

As Diaz Combat Sports continues to grow, Savard’s performance stands as an inspiring example of what dedication and community support can achieve.
