Haida Gwaii News contributor Jeffrey R. Bear has received international recognition for his writing, earning third place in the Best Editorial/Column – Small Outlets category at the 2026 Indigenous Media Awards.
Bear was recognized for "The Year I Took the Long Way Home," published in the 2025 Christmas edition of Haida Gwaii News, by the Indigenous Journalists Association during its annual awards.
"We're incredibly proud of Jeff," said publisher Stacey Brzostowski. "His writing has a way of making readers slow down, reflect and see the world a little differently. It's wonderful to see his work recognized on an international stage."
Bear has been a regular contributor to Haida Gwaii News, sharing thoughtful columns and stories that have resonated with readers across the islands.
