Masset Airport recorded more bird and wildlife activity during the second quarter of 2026, but no bird strikes, according to the airport’s latest safety report.

The report, included in the Village of Masset’s Sept. 28 council agenda package, recorded 80 bird and wildlife occurrences between April and June, up from 69 during the same period in 2025. Bird activity increased from 67 reports to 75, while wildlife activity increased from zero to five.

Despite the increase in reported activity, no bird strikes were recorded during the quarter, compared with two during the same period last year.

The report said the increase in wildlife reports, combined with the elimination of strikes, was consistent with improved reporting and active hazard management rather than worsening conditions at the airport.

Overall hazard reports at the airport increased from 35 in the second quarter of 2025 to 41 this year. Airfield-related reports dropped from 28 to 22, while reports involving foreign-object debris fell from 26 to 17, a decrease of about 35 per cent.

Other reports included four equipment-related hazards, up from none during the same period last year, along with two operations-related reports. Those involved a flight crew matter and unauthorized access to a restricted area.

The airport also reported that four previous Transport Canada findings have been closed and there are no outstanding Transport Canada corrective actions.
